The Importance of Being Grammatical

I interviewed a professor in the English Department. She believed grammar is a rudimentary necessity for she and her colleagues. Her main stress was the ability for people in her profession to create complex ideas in clear language. She acknowledged the pressures which are put on a professor during publishing. She also said the better one gets at writing, the harder it becomes. She spoke about the importance of anyone’s writing. She truly believes when a person hands in a paper, letter, or statement, it is an extension of that person. She also reflected on student writing. She noted how impressed she is when students can express complex thought with clarity. She stresses that students should not write above their abilities. Overall, she believes the written word to be extremely powerful.
On a lighter note, the professor told a personal story. When she was in high school, she dated a boy in college. They had a correspondence through letters that whole year. Yet when he came back in the summer she broke up with him. His grammar skills and writing capabilities were simply too much for her to handle. This shows the power of language, especially when she stated, "He was very cute too, but I just couldn’t do it."
